LENA HORNE & AVA GARDNER:

In 1951, when Hollywood cast Ava Gardner to portray a mulatto in “Show Boat,” instead of Lena Horne, the black community was outraged. Ava took it upon herself to locate Horne and to personally apologize for the snub. Ava also told friends that her father was an awful racist. Her idea of youthful rebellion was to sneak off with the kids of black sharecroppers and go to church with them. Gardner often said, it's a shame how blacks are discriminated against in this society.
